Description
The borage plant has seeds that are a rich source of the essential fatty acid called gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA. The body can convert GLA to an anti-inflammatory compound called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). Borage oil has been shown to be helpful with symptoms of autoimmune disease such as RA, skin disorders, premenstrual syndrome and cramps, diabetic neuropathy and other inflammatory conditions.* Three oils are good sources of GLA- borage, evening primrose and black currant seed , with borage having the highest concentration.
Arthritis
Studies with GLA and rheumatoid arthritis are encouraging.* Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, painful inflammation of the joints often requiring the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A study published in the ”American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” analyzed the data from many trials, including their own, concluded that GLA in oils such as borage could provide significant symptom relief.*
Skin Health
Borage oil has been used for soothing atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions.* Although clinical research so far is mixed, there are several encouraging studies; including a study published in the ”British Journal of Nutrition” that reported good results using borage oil to treat skin dryness and irritation.*
Cautions and Considerations
The borage plant produces natural toxins called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, or PA, which could be toxic to the liver. Small amounts are sometimes detected in the oil, but Natural Medicine Formulas Borage Oil is PA-free, cold pressed and extracted without chemicals.
